How To Transform Your Sitting Room This Christmas

The kids may have some interesting ideas about how to lay out the Christmas decorations in your sitting room.

Christmas is nearly upon us and now is the time to start considering how to make your sitting room a Christmas wonderland. There is nothing better than sitting in your Christmas themed sitting room that is themed with not only a beautiful tree but cosy items such as cushions, mats, rugs or throws.

Here are some tips on how to transform your sitting room this
Christmas:

Pick a theme

The traditional red, gold or green is not to everyone’s taste and more and
more people are opting for silver, purple or even mustard! Choosing one to three colours is a good way to start so you don’t confuse the room with lots of colour however; if you love multicolours – go for it! It is your sitting room after all. Then decide if you want to go for a more traditional style or modern/contemporary Christmas décor as there are lots of great options depending on what you like most.

Make a budget

We all know how expensive Christmas is so before you begin shopping for
a few new bits (to transform your sitting room) have a rough budget in mind. The budget should be what you can afford while considering other things like food shopping, presents and the entertainment/outings expenses. While you may want to get everything now a lot of people buy pieces every year and build on what they have so starting with a few bits is better than nothing if you are on a tight budget.

Make a list of what you would like

Things like cushion covers can brighten up your sitting room without breaking the piggy bank. Cosy Christmas themed throws are another
inexpensive item and things like candles, fairy lights and ornaments can be picked up easily enough. The biggest expenses are the more extravagant train sets, little house sets, or your nativity set but these are things you will buy and keep for the years ahead. In our house, we bought a few houses every year to create a big town and while it took time to get it to the way we liked, we at least had something to start with. Look at fireplace decorations and stockings to hang up as well as tinsel for the door frames or mini Christmas plants/flowers. Don’t forget about the Christmas smell with scented candles or you could get pot pourri if you prefer.

Do it together

Part of the Christmas fun is doing things as a family and the kids may have some interesting ideas about how to lay out the Christmas decorations. You may not agree with everything, but it is nice to have that say and let the kids enjoy the transformation from normal sitting room to Christmas wonderland. If you prefer you could send the kids to bed one night and let them wake up to a sitting room with a beautiful Christmas theme and then do the main event (the Christmas tree) together.

Make stuff

Don’t underestimate the power of arts and crafts as if you are in any way art inclined you may be able to make some nice things with the kids to decorate the sitting room with. They don’t have to be perfect but as long as they fit in with your theme, they can be a lovely addition to the sitting room. You will find in the years to come that the handmade decorations are the ones you will most love for as they were made by the kids when they were younger. These things are full of memories which Christmas is all about.
