Why Family Exercise Is So Important

As most of us know, exercise has innumerable mental and physical health benefits, it helps to improve fitness and overall physical health but it also improves sleep and helps to reduce stress.

Further that, studies show that families who stay fit together through family exercise activities see improvements in their attachment, social skill and emotional management.

Families who get through challenges together can help develop stronger conflict-resolution skills and build more resilience.

This article is part of our #FamilyFun30 Challenge, where every day we set a simple, accessible and fun task to enjoy with your family. Check out the full list of challenges here and get involved!

Here are some more reasons why exercising with the whole family is a great idea:

It can establish some good habits.

By helping your children associate physical activity with a feeling of belonging, togetherness and fun you can plant this seed that will grow within them for life.

That seed doesn’t have to be planted at a young age only, taking the step to get active with your family could also be the beginning of a fitness hobby for you too.

Working together as a team to problem solve helps you bond at a deeper level.

It gives the whole family motivation.

You spend the most part of your time with your family, so chances are if your family are interested in exercise, you will be too. If exercise becomes your family's ‘norm’, before you know it, you will be doing outdoor activities and games without even realising it.

It's an opportunity to bond.

When you think of family time, most people think of going to an event together or watching a movie or TV together. But how much bonding and talking are you really doing by doing those activities?

Although doing those things are important too and they certainly have their place as far as bonding goes, no real communication occurs. With exercise communication is essential. Working together as a team to problem solve helps you bond at a deeper level.

It might even be fun!

Let’s face it, as ‘fun’ as you and the kids think screen time is, it leaves you feeling a bit sluggish. There is nothing better than getting the endorphins flowing and breathing in some fresh air. It is exhilarating.

It may take a few activities to find one that suits your family the most but once you do, you will reap the rewards.
