How To Get Out Of A Style Rut As A Mum

Getting out of a style rut doesn't mean you need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. There are many things you can do to feel confident and stylish.

As parents who lead incredibly hectic, busy lives, it can be easy to reach for the same style of clothing everyday (for me, this usually consists of clothes made from some form of stretchy material and a massive sweatshirt).

While this is certainly an easy and reliable approach, we may soon find ourselves in a bit of style rut. Although our priorities don’t lie in looking perfect every single day, if we don’t feel good about how we look for a prolonged amount of time, it can definitely have an impact on our confidence and self-esteem.

If this sounds like you (or you’re just looking for some
style inspo!) then keep reading.

Do a massive clothes clear-out.

This seems super obvious, but it’s a sure-fire way to get
your wardrobe organized and full of things that you actually enjoy wearing.
Look at it this way – you can’t keep accidentally reaching for those leggings
with a hole in them if they’re no longer there. Throw out anything that doesn’t
make you feel comfortable and confident and then asses what you have left.

Consider skin tone and silhouette.

Wearing clothes that suit your skin tone is an easy way to always look put together. Even if it’s just jeans and a t-shirt, if the colours make your hair and eyes pop, you’re guaranteed to look and feel great.

Similarly, pay attention to silhouettes that you feel flatter your body shape. While I’m a big believer in a no-rules approach to “dressing for your body shape”, if there is a particular style of clothing that makes you feel confident, wear it! For instance, if you know that midi skirts flatter you better than trousers do, get a few of them in different patterns and colours.

Throw out anything that doesn’t make you feel comfortable and confident and then asses what you have left.

Going forward, make a conscious effort to keep these things in mind while shopping, and you’ll soon have a wardrobe filled with go-to flattering outfits.

Basics are your best friend.

If you have a great selection of basics, you’ll always be able to pull a fab outfit together in seconds. People like @tara_makeup and @rosieconxxx are great sources of inspiration for this. With a hat or a pair of killer boots, you can take a simple outfit to the next level.

Make sure you have basic pieces like white and black t-shirts, comfortable jeans and a leather jacket. With these simple pieces, rest assured you’ll always be able to dress well.

You don’t have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe to get out of a style rut, all it takes is a bit of creativity (and a few accessories!)

Remember, even though you’re a parent, it is absolutely not
selfish to want to look and feel great. After all, a happy and confident parent
is one of the best things you could give to your children.
