5 Things That Baby Brain Made Me Do This Week

As I approached the trolleys it happened. I stood in front of them and pressed the button on my car keys.

I'm not sure how long baby brain is allowed to be used. I mean, is there a time limit for each person? A cut-off point where it is no longer considered to be a legitimate reason for behaviour? In my life it is the gift that keeps on giving.

Baby brain is in full swing over at my camp and it is the perfect mixture of hilarious and worrying. For me it's the sheer amount of things I have to do coupled with sleep deprivation. It leaves me in a peculiar place where I'm motoring along on auto-pilot and it doesn't take much to throw me. The smallest change or curve-ball can leave me unable to think on my feet or master the art of conversation.

I do see it as a gift though. These exchanges and mishaps are quite funny to look back on and they do kind of serve a purpose too. They remind me that I cannot do it all and that sleep deprivation is a tangible, and sometimes dangerous thing.

Here are 5 things that baby brain made me do this week

1. I thought my mop was a hoover. Yes I did just write those words. I was doing the weekly "big clean". I was coming to the end of the list and it was almost time to plonk myself down on the sofa with a cup of tea and a bar of chocolate. I filled the bucket, dipped the mop in and started running around the house like a woman possessed. I was washing the floors like my life depended on it. Like I was on the clock. Because I was. Genuinely, in those moments, my brain told me that the battery on the hoover was about to go and I had to finish the job before it did.

2. It was a busy mid-week day. In between the school run and a GP appointment for my baby I had to pick up a couple of groceries. A little more than a basket would carry. I didn't have the buggy so a trolley was needed. I parked right beside the trolley bay and was delighted to see that there were lots of trolleys with baby seats. As I approached the trolleys it happened. I stood in front of them and pressed the button on my car keys. The button that opens my car. I pressed it and waited as though the trolley was going to unlatch itself and move backwards in to my hands. I have no words.

3. I forgot I wasn't pregnant. It's been nine and a half months since I was pregnant and when filling out a form I ticked pregnant.

4. I filled the slow cooker because I was going to be out all day. I prepped the ingredients, added it all in and worked out the timings in my head. If I stuck it on the low setting it would be ready by the time I got home that evening. I felt quietly smug as I traveled in to work. That was until I realized, at 6pm that evening, that I hadn't turned it on. Instead of coming home to my slow cooked dinner I had no dinner and a pot of raw meat that had been sitting there all day. I may have responded with a curse word....

5. My son's name is Billy and my daughter's name is Willow. On more than one occasion this week I called one of my children Willy.
