Why Our "Summer Body" Goals Need To Be Scrapped

You might be confused if I started ranting about spring, autumn or winter body goals. Unfortunately, we’ve all heard of "summer body" goals, but if you ask me they’re about as useful as an own goal.

I’m hoping that because of the last year and a half or so, we’ll all push our body worries aside and bathe in the sunshine wearing whatever we want. After all, the sun is a cure for a lot of things so why not let it soothe away self-doubt?

Here’s why the term "summer body" needs to be relegated to Room 101.

Not Just A "Summer Body"

If you’re determined to take better care of your body because you want to feel better, then surely it makes sense to do that all year round rather than just during the summer months. Advertisers change their message depending on what season it is, and while winter is the time to "treat yourself", summer is the time to "deprive yourself". It’s enough to make your head spin.

My main goal? I can’t wait to indulge in a spa day and treat my body to a little reward for everything it’s been through after giving birth to two kids!

No One Likes A Show-Off

The main objective of getting a summer body is the opportunity to show it off, but really, who cares? How often do you spend a day at the beach preoccupied with looking at other women’s figures? Erm, never! When we feel self-conscious we worry that everyone is looking at us - but the reality is it’s not the case.

Everyone is so concerned with how they look that they have very little time to look at anyone else. Besides, spending time at the seaside with your children will be one of their fondest memories and all they’re going to remember is the amount of fun they had.

The Importance Of Offline Relationships In An Online World

Instaworthy

Instagram is one of the main sources for our insecurities and most of us enjoy sharing snaps there of what we’ve been up to over the summer. Our pics might include places we’ve been, people we’ve hung out with, cute photos of our little ones and delicious barbecue spreads. Even if we had the perfect body (which doesn’t exist) would we really be baring all in a bikini pic for our followers – NO!

Get Real

Although young people that are growing up with social media undoubtedly have a lot of pressure on them, I am grateful for the fact that when they shop for swimwear, most stores no longer bombard them with images of girls that look like they belong on Victoria’s Secret catwalk. Speaking of V.S, even they have started celebrating and including real women in their marketing and that’s definitely something to smile about.
