How To Plan The Best Family Ski Holiday

Are you thinking of heading skiing as a family this winter? It can seem daunting for many but it is without a doubt an unforgettable experience.

Are you thinking of heading skiing as a family this winter? It can seem daunting for many but it is without a doubt an unforgettable experience.

There are many factors to consider when planning a family skiing holiday so here are some tips to help you plan a trip of a lifetime.

Get the right clothing

Shop in advance and try to get the best deals by picking up the essentials in ski clothing sale events in stores like Lidl, Aldi and Sports Direct. Kids are especially sensitive to the cold so take plenty of warm clothes and spares. You will need lots of layers, thermals, waterproof jackets, leggings and ski socks.

Before you go make sure they fit - there is nothing worse than arriving at your destination to find out something doesn't fit properly and won't keep your little ones dry and warm.

Get some practice in

We recommend you try some dry slope skiing lessons ahead of your travels and again before you brave the trails. Lessons tend to book up fast so it's best to book well in advance to help build you and our families confidence before hitting the slopes.

Pace Yourself

Let the kids learn at their own speed. Unlike adults, it can take a little longer so allow for frustration as they try to get the hang of the skis and in some cases, their snow boots. When they get tired, take a break and build a snowman or have a hot chocolate before trying again.

Don't overdo it

Before you head off on your big family adventure, research some non-skiing things to do. Kids attention spans are short and there is only so much they can do on the slopes so make sure you have alternative arrangements to fall back on. This could be ice-skating, sledding, gondola rides and other indoor and outdoor recreational activities.

Think ahead

When booking your chalet try to book one close to the piste. Walking in ski boots while carrying skis is not an ideal situation with young kids. If it means upgrading when you arrive on-site, do it -  for your sanity if nothing else!

Bring lots of snacks

Like with any holiday we always advise plenty of snacks, however, they are a must on this kind of trip. The last thing you want is a cranky kid so keep them topped up with energy-boosting snacks to keep them going.

Childcare

Most resorts offer childcare facilities but before you book, check the type childcare on offer and make sure it caters to your families specific requirements and if at all possible, try to add it as part of your ski package.

Don't forget the essentials

And finally, pack sunglasses, SPF and goggles for everyone. If you don't wear protective eyewear you're putting yourself and your family at risk of retina burn and the last thing anyone wants is sunburn on their eyeballs. Hand warmers are also a must, bring extras in your suitcase - you'll thank us upon your return.
