10 Common Thoughts From Mums Who Are Weaning From Breastfeeding

Making the decision to wean your baby from breastfeeding is not an easy one.

When the time comes for a mum to wean from breastfeeding it can be a very emotional experience. For some women its a couple of weeks or months and for others it may be years. Making the decision to wean your baby from breastfeeding is not an easy one.
Mothers choose to end their breastfeeding journeys for many different reasons but these seem to be some of the very common thoughts regardless of how long the breastfeeding journey has been or what the reason for weaning is.
  • It’s the end of an era. That in itself feels emotional. Even just saying the words. It’s the whole “end” thing. It doesn’t sound right when it’s in relation to your baby.
  • This is/was our thing. OUR thing. Nobody else’s. I’ll miss our thing.
  • I better start scribbling down the sums because breastfeeding was free. The alternative might not be.
  • Do I now have to go back to eating just one piece of cake and say no to seconds at dinner?
  • People are telling me there will be a hormonal shift and possibly some down days while everything settles. I don’t think I have space for any more hormones.
  • When will the very last feed be? Will I photograph it? Will I cry much? The anxiety is intense.
  • Why do I feel so guilty? I know this is the right decision for us but the thought of it makes me feel guilty.
  • Is it wrong that I’m looking forward to a night out...
  • My boobs are going to hurt for a while, aren’t they? I’m not looking forward to this one.
  • Is this our last baby? Will I ever breastfeed again?
