If your goal today was to go and see a nice long feature that your kids will love, while also giving you a couple of hours downtime, then you might want to avoid this one.

The children’s TV series ‘Paw Patrol’ is loved by its target audience (those aged 6 and under), and if you are bringing your children to the big screen just to see them, ‘Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups’ will be lapped up by them. Unfortunately, outside of this specific age group, this animation offers nothing new for anyone else dragged along to see it.

A 2018 TV special that has been released into select theatres is all that this “movie” is, and nothing else. It feels like a bit of a cop-out then, having to go to the cinema, paying a full-priced ticket for you and your younger ones, and then only being in the screen for one hour and ten minutes (that time being made up of one extra-long episode, followed by two normal episodes). You might not even have finished eating your popcorn.

As with a lot of pre-school and younger children animations over the years, ‘Paw Patrol’ are dealing with the motif of finding the kindness in helping people. The inclusion of cute dogs, and superpowered ones at that, all adds to the appeal of these pups. You can’t help but fall in love with them, no matter how much you try not to. Your kids love them – and if they’re keeping them entertained that who cares?

If ‘Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups’ manages to win you over, never fear because a fully-fledged theatrical release based on the superhero canines is set to release in 2021 – let’s just hope this movie lasts longer than your patience for pre-school comedy.

If your goal today was to go and see a nice long feature that your kids will love, while also giving you a couple of hours downtime, then you might want to avoid this one. You would be better off going to see something – anything – else that your cinema has to offer in the cinema now (‘Toy Story 4’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Angry Birds Movie 2’). ‘Paw Patrol’ was destined to stay on our TV screens, just as this longer feature proves.
