First there were baby showers, bridal showers, gender reveals then PERIOD PARTIES...
In an effort to break the taboo around periods, rumour has it period parties are coming to Ireland. Yes, you've read that right. A celebration between family and friends following your first visit from Aunt Flo.
Like I get baby showers, bridal showers and gender reveals maybe even a sweet 16th party but when it comes periods, do we want the world to know? Especially your aunts, cousins and possibly your granda? I'm not sure pin the tampon on the donkey is the way forward nor is a vagina-shaped cake with red velvet trimmings.
For me, as a mother of three girls, I'd be inclined to put together a little hamper full of sweet treats, a hot water botter, some painkillers and a mix of sanitary products.
If you use this as an example, I love how the young girls are proud and refer to themselves as “blood sisters”. Each with painted fingernails as a marker. I want to support my daughters as they enter womanhood, by talking about our bodies, the reproductive system, being as open and approachable as I possibly can but throwing a party?
I think I'll pass on this one.
