Teenagers face many decisions, especially as they grow older and head towards college to become a fully-fledged adult. They are expected to be able to know how to make these decisions and understand what is right for them, but this isn’t the case and sometimes parents will have to help.
Here are some of the biggest decisions your teenager will have to make at some point throughout their teen years.
TY or not? – Transition year can be a great year for some students but not so much for others. Making that decision is hard for a teen and you should consider a few things: Is your son or daughter younger than their classmates and would an extra year in school in be of benefit? Transition year gives your teenager plenty of time to consider their career prospects while they learn new skills and try out aspects of the workforce. It can also help boost their self-confidence but as mentioned, it may not be for everyone.
Subjects – Subject choice is another big decision for your teenager to consider and, in some cases, your teen will have to pick subjects that are needed for their college course. Obviously, for a student who knows what they want to do in their career this is easy but for others who are more confused about their future, it can be hard.
College plans – The time will come when your teenager will need to decide on their college course and plan for their CAO application. This is one of the biggest decisions in their life and they will be stressed and worried about what lies ahead. Don’t forget they have exam stress to contend with too so it will be an anxious time as your teen figures out what is right or not right for them.
Friendships – Friends will come and go, and your teenager may find themselves lonely at times as they progress through their life in secondary school and towards college. They will need to decide who they feel adds something to their life and who is a good friend to them. Peer pressure can cause some friction and ultimately, your teen will lose and gain friends.
Boyfriends and girlfriends – Make no mistake matters of the heart will play a significant role in your teen's life and sometimes you will have a broken-hearted teen on your hands. This is a hard time for them as they find their way in life and lose relationships with people they cared for. Then there is the matter of sex and consent which will become a huge part of their life too. It won’t be easy for parents or teens.
Temptations – Teenagers will have to face many risky situations and make decisions about alcohol or drugs. No parent wants to consider their child doing such things, but the reality is most teenagers will experiment. Deciding their own route is another tough one and with peer pressure to contend with your teen will struggle.
It is important you support your teenager as they have a lot on their minds and need guidance.
