Following the Government's decision to impose much-needed restrictions to delay the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) had to suspend all Check it Fit events nationwide until further notice.

Given the personal nature of the service, it was the right decision. However, many parents, grandparents and guardians have now been left in limbo. They are concerned about their child car seats and most importantly, their children's safety.

In Ireland, 4 out of 5 car seats are incorrectly installed, a frightening statistic. For many years the RSA has worked tirelessly hosting numerous pop up Check it Fit events nationwide. These allow parents to get their car seats checked, and ensure the child's seat is safely restrained in the car.

Last week the Road Safety Authority announced the Check it Fits service was back, but this time it's a little different. They have now introduced a new online service that will allow you to book a virtual appointment with one of their expert checkers at a time and date that suits you.

To avail of the new service, you will need a portable device, which has a camera and internet access. The expert will then guide you through the process of fitting your car seat at home.

Before booking your slot, it is advised to take note of the make and model of the car seat. The weight and height of the child is also important to know.

You will also be asked to provide information on the make, model and year of the car. This will allow the fitter to determine if the seat is compatible, and if it's safe for your child

Once your booking is made successfully, you will then need to download the Microsoft Teams app to facilitate the appointment. You can then attend your appointment by clicking a link sent in a confirmation email.
