This book is a celebration of individuality and self belief.
WHAT DO PARENTS NEED TO KNOW?
This book is a celebration of individuality. It showcases the innocence and self belief that is so natural for children. It also demonstrates the power and importance of family relationships.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
This is a story about self belief and creativity. While on a bus ride Julian notices a group of women dressed flamboyantly. They remind him of mermaids and he loves mermaids.
He uses his beautiful imagination to transform himself in to a mermaid using objects around the house. He is concerned about what Abuela will think about what he has done, but perhaps more concerned about what she thinks about the meaning behind it.
WHAT DO WE SAY?
Jessica Love has created something very special here. Her debut picture book is full of inspiration and celebrations of individuality. She has captured the innocence of childhood and the power of imagination in a way that transports us there too.
Julian is a little boy who loves mermaids and Abuela is happy to celebrate that with him. When she discovers that Julian has used her curtains and plants to create a Mermaid costume her reassurance and encouragement is a beautiful thing. She adds to the costume and becomes invested in Julian's colourful world.
WHAT DO KIDS SAY?
"Yeah boys can be mermaids. It's just a part of life"
