It's Christmas time and one of the family traditions that we look forward to the most in our clan is the annual Christmas Panto!
Oh no we don't...oh yes we do!
This year we went to The Helix to check out Aladdin and boy oh boy was it fantastic! The energy and exuberance of the Helix's performance was enthralling for the kids and the big kids alike! A mystical genie, a flying carpet and an old lamp, a beautiful princess, irresistible baddies and an exotic trip to the Far East. Sure what more could you want?
Starring singing sensation Tom Moran and packed full of stunning special effects, the panto set in the magical city of Agrabah, amazed, amused, and truly enchanted three generations of our family!
The wickedly funny Eoin Cannon plays panto villain Jafaah, with the lovely Danielle Williams playing Princess Jasmine. My kids favourite character Janowah (Do-Ya-Know-Wha?) was played by veteran funny man Aidan Mannion. Adam Lynch takes on the role of the Genie, while one of Irish musical theatre's most talented stars Liam Butler, is fluttering his giant eyelashes once again as Dame Lola.
Colin Hughes plays the hilarious but dumb character of Wishee, and he's in charge of audience sing-a-longs and creating general mayhem.
The big highlights for my kids:
When Aladdin went flying on his magic carpet. My five year old told his Dad that Aladdin was flying in the sky "in real life". It was that authentic and real!
They also loved the random appearance of Pikachu the Pokémon who kept popping up during the performance, meaning there were shouts of "he's behind you" in abundance throughout the show!
The big laughs for the adults:
Who doesn't like a little bit of Donald Trump humour? There was plenty of incredibly funny references to the President Elect, many of which had tears rolling down lots of mum's and dad's faces.
Their twist on 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here' was also incredibly funny (their version was 'I'm a Princess Marry Me Out of Here') There were squeals of delight from my kids when one of the contestants was minion Bob!
Produced by Claire Tighe and co-written by Claire with Karl Harpur, Helix pantomimes are renowned for their blow your socks off vocals, crafty comic timing and raucous family fun, and Aladdin didn't disappoint and delivered the very best of Irish family entertainment this festive season.
Aladdin is on in Dublin's The Helix Theatre until Sunday, January 22, 2017
