For many women breastfeeding is a simple case of latching their baby on and feeding on demand. There is no need for any extra accessories or products to help them along the way,
However, there are some accessories and products on the market that can be really helpful to some breastfeeding mothers. In fact, they may be one of the reasons that the breastfeeding relationship flourished and lasted for so long.
Here are some bits and pieces that breastfeeding mums found helpful:
Nursing Bras
I would go as far as saying that these are a must unless you do not wear a bra. However, I suspect that if you typically do not wear a bra you may now require one to hold a breast pad in place as the majority of women experience leaking from their breasts. A nursing bra is designed to be comfortable and easy to manipulate for breastfeeding mothers. You can easily breastfeed while wearing a nursing bra as the straps clip down really simply. You can then re-clip it when the feed is done. You’ll have all the support that a regular bra offers too. These days you can pick up nursing bras in many high-street stores for as little as €10.
Breast Angels
These are healing cups that work to prevent sore nipples as they allow the cracked nipples to heal. These incredibly eco-friendly shells are designed to fit all breast sizes and are made from premium silver. Silver is believed to have incredible healing properties and when the Breast Angels are placed directly on to the breast in between every feed it is believed that you will not need any other ointments or products to aid the healing process. They contain a natural antiseptic and can even help prevent mastitis. At around the €50 mark, these are pricey but you will only need one pair and many mothers claim that they are lifesavers.
Nipple Shields
These are not a necessity for all women but they can really make a difference to those that need them. If your baby is premature they may help your baby latch or if you have flat or inverted nipples they may help your baby draw the nipple out which will create a stronger more efficient latch. They are designed to be used short-term and can be picked up in most pharmacies. You should consult a Lactation Consultant before using to ensure they are the right solution to your issue.
A Feeding Pillow
A comfortable feeding pillow can offer you support when trying to perfect your baby’s latch. It may also take some of the pressure off your lower tummy if you have had a C-Section. Many mothers find that it helps reduce any strain in their neck and back and offers a great deal of comfort in those first couple of weeks. They are usually pretty inexpensive too.
Breastfeeding Clothes
This is an interesting one. While many mothers get by just fine without breastfeeding-friendly clothing you might be more comfortable to have the option. When your baby is hungry you don’t want any delays so access really must be a consideration. Many mums found that picking up a couple of breastfeeding dresses or tops worked really well for those days when they were out and about. Other mums think it’s a waste of money and prefer to wear a string top under their regular clothes so that they can easily feed by lifting up their top. The Jury is out on this one.
