Ideas for a family Easter break

Planning an Easter break away with the family? Read some great advice from our travel expert.

The Easter break is a funny time to go away with weather being unpredictable in a lot of holiday resorts. A sun holiday might not always be an option unless you are willing to travel further a-field with the little ones in toe.  Kids clubs and facilities may not be in operation that early in the season as well so that is something to bear in mind when looking for a holiday that falls outside of the summer season.
The Canary Islands:   You can reach the Canary Islands in just over 4 hours from Ireland.   Each of the islands has its own charm.  You will find accommodation to suit all budgets with anything from basic apartments to luxury hotels.  Each of the islands have 2 and 3 bedroom apartments to suit families, these sell out early at peak times so always book as far in advance as you can.  Gran Canaria usually records very slightly higher temperatures than its neighbouring islands.  Lanzarote is still one of the most popular family destinations at Easter time with a good selection of properties with children’s facilities.
Disneyland Paris:  One thing to remember if booking Disneyland Paris is that school holidays means long queues!  It is a holiday that is truly a wonderful experience especially for small children, but if they have to wait an hour for a ride it soon turns in to a bit of a nightmare.  If travelling here during a busy time to avoid grumpy faces make sure to book a hotel that offers extra magic hours in the park, this allows you to enter the park 2 hours before the general public so you can go a variety of popular rides without having to wait too long.
Book Disneyland Paris early too, if see an offer for free meals included jump on it as it can be pricey to eat over there.   Plan your time in the parks to ensure you get the most out of it.  Go early to the character meet and greet points to make sure that you get the all-important photos of your child’s favourite characters.  Go to the free shows in the Studios, they are fantastic, especially the Disney Junior show where your child can meet characters in the waiting area before going in.
City Breaks:  City breaks get overlooked sometimes when people are considering a family holiday.  You don’t have to stay smack bang in the centre of town but staying in a hotel or apartment on the outskirts of a city with good transport links to attractions gives you the best of both worlds.  They tend be better value and can be of a higher standard meaning you get more for your money.
Depending on the ages of your children and their interests... there is a city break to suit everyone.  From London where you can take in a trip to Legoland or a theatre show to Barcelona to take a tour of the football stadium.  Excursions, park and show tickets can all be booked in advance, please always make sure that you book through a reputable source.   Most cities have free things to do so it needn’t cost you a fortune to the kids amused and have an amazing trip.   Look out for airline sales and book well in advance to get the best fares for your trip.
One piece of advice that I give parents over and over again is to remember that a happy child means a happy parent!  Always prepare for a rainy day, especially at Easter time by bringing some of your child’s favourite books and toys to keep them amused.
