Dublin mum creates Breastfeeding 'Support Kits'

Dublin mum Jan Martin’s second son Caleb was born in 2016. Unfortunately he was born with heart defects and had heart surgery at a delicate 6 days old.

Jan very much wanted to breastfeed him, as she had with her first son but thought she would be unable to. Staff in the children’s hospital quickly taught her she could!

The staff brought Jan a breast pump and with some support and encouragement Jan pumped breastmilk for her little boy before and for a few days after his surgery. Up until he could breastfeed again.

Caleb recovered well and has been well since.

Jan now wants to offer the same support that she received to other mothers in the same situation she was faced with. Support for mums in other children’s hospitals who are pumping breastmilk for their sick babies.

Jan came up with the idea of ‘PumpPal”.  A kit to bring into mums with essentials to support them.

The Pump Pal packs include:
  • A leaflet with information on pumping
  • A reusable bag
  • A tupperware container
  • Mug, spoon and porridge sachets (Porridge Oats are great for Milk Supply)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Travel size toiletries, lip balm, eye mask, earplugs
  • Photo keyring to put a picture of you baby to encourage milk for pumping
  • A book to read with baby
  • Breast pump cleaning brush & Washing up liquid
  • Microwaveable sterilising bag
She has created 100 support kits for a six-month trial at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

Jan is currently fundraising to create another 100 kits and has already reached more than half of her €5,000 goal.

A donation of €25 will provide an entire support kit for a breastfeeding mum and help to ease the stress that any parent of a sick child goes through.

Being able to breastfeed your child when they are going through surgery or medical treatment is a wonderful gift to give to any mother and if you would like to support Jan and her initiative you can find her cause on IFundraise.ie.

Likewise, if you know a mum-to-be, creating a kit like this for her would be a really lovely idea and a welcome gift any new mum would love.

Breastfeeding is a beautiful bonding experience but also one that mums can often find a lack of support in. With Jan’s ‘PumpPal’ kits it gives mum the reassurance and comfort of knowing somebody understands what you’re going through and that somebody has been through this before.

Breastfeeding mums- you are doing an amazing job!
